the lymphatic system acts as a shadow system within the body, just as extensive as the circulatory system yet only making its presence known during periods of illness.

the body’s outer membrane, despite its own fragility, must keep the interior safe from harm. after infection with bubonic plague, the lymphatic system expands, distending the body and exposing itself to scrutiny. as the nature of the body is dictated by its systems, it is reconstituted in response to a different system of structures and processes.

initial system
using several different metrics, the relationship between the lymphatic system and the surface of the body are visualized to anticipate the most affected areas.
expanded lymphatic system

sectioning traces the system's expansion as it moves through the body, differentiating between areas that are affected as well as showing the larger effects on the outer envelope.

several key areas are spatialized through aggregated layers suspended between the sections.
